The Heed Ophthalmic Foundation is a private foundation which provides awards to individuals pursuing postgraduate fellowship studies and research in the field of ophthalmology and the related visual sciences. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and graduates of accredited medical schools or schools of osteopathic medicine. The postgraduate fellowship activities must be conducted within the United States.
In 2006, the Directors of the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation are designating the Heed Fellowship as a Merit Award of $12,000 which is given to selected individuals on the basis of competitive applications. The fellowship training institution is not permitted to use these monies to reduce institutional salary, benefits, or overhead. Candidates for the Heed Fellowship are those individuals pursuing clinical subspecialty training, education and research. In the selection process, preference is given to those individuals who will pursue academic careers. With the successful conclusion of their postgraduate training, the awardees will be recognized as Heed Fellows.
