Stephen D. McLeod, M.D., Director |
Biographical Sketch
Dr. McLeod graduated from Dartmouth
College in 1985, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in1989. He completed residency
training in ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary of the
University of Illinois at Chicago in 1993, and fellowship training in
cornea, external disease and refractive surgery at the Doheny Eye Institute
of the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.
Dr. McLeod returned to the Illinois
Eye and Ear Infirmary as an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences from 1995 to 1998. He joined the Department
of Ophthalmology at the University of California San Francisco School
of Medicine in 1998, and became full Professor in 2005. He is currently
the Theresa M. and Wayne M. Caygill, M.D. Endowed Chair, Chairman of
the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California San Francisco, and
Director of UCSF’s Beckman Vision Center.
Dr. McLeod's principal clinical and
research interests are corneal and external diseases and refractive
surgery, particularly the laboratory diagnosis, medical therapy, and surgery
of infectious keratitis, and the development of accommodative intraocular
implants.
Dr. McLeod has served as co-editor of the online edition of the Archives of Ophthalmology since 1996, and on the editorial board of the journal. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Refractive Surgery. He is a consultant to the Ophthalmic Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Amongst other committees, he has been a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Preferred Practice Panel for Refractive Error since 2001, and is currently the Panel Chair.
