Stanley Chang, M.D.
Stanley Chang, MD, is the Edward S. Harkness Professor of Ophthalmology and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia University. In 2003, he was also named the K.K. Tse and Ku Teh Ying Professor of Ophthalmology. A native of Shanghai, China, Dr. Chang grew up in the New York area and studied engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a B.A., and then went on to work in biomedical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his medical education at Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons, took his residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Harvard Medical School), and was awarded a vitreoretinal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (University of Miami). Dr. Chang joined the Department of Ophthalmology at Cornell University Medical School in 1979, where he became Professor of Ophthalmology in 1994. Appointed the Edward S. Harkness Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia in 1995, he also serves as director of the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute. Dr. Chang has developed and pioneered the use of numerous revolutionary surgical approaches to treat complicated forms of retinal detachment, improving outcomes for patients worldwide. He was the first to use perfluoropropane gas in the management of retinal detachments made worse by recurrent scar tissue proliferation (PVR), and developed use of perfluorocarbon liquids during retinal surgery. Dr. Chang also helped to introduce a panoramic viewing system to improve retinal visualization during surgery. He is the recipient of many prestigious honors and awards including the Hermann Wacker Prize from the Club Jules Gonin, the Vitreous Society's Wilhelm Helmerich Prize and the Alcon Research Institute Award. Dr. Chang is consistently recognized in America's Best Doctors and other prominent listings as one of the nation's foremost vitreoretinal surgeons. |
